Language and register

register means and refers to the style of language employed by a publication. The registers you use when talking to your friends or when talking to a child are very different. We use these different registers or styles of language all of the time, adapting and adjusting as we go. Print publications must decide on appropriate register and this becomes one of the defining features of the publications.
Its also the term used to described  the type of images and lanuage is used as some magazines for example some would have swear words like a rock magazine, but magaqzinews like vogue would not have swearing in them becasue its a completely different genre.

In my work im going to use a specfic type of language and register so it appeals to the audience im aiming at more. This is beacsue i dont want to have the wrong content or look as it wont appeal to my target market. For example oi would not have childish language in my magazine or hipster language as its not mainstream. Ther sort of magazine i have created is a rough and completely none mainstream magazine so swearing and specific termonolgy will be used.Thios is why my genre of magazine is known to have edgy titles and sontreversial headiong. Aftert studying other magazines simliar to my genre i came to the conclusion this would appeal the best ,as my magazine is different quirky and very much repleing the typical genres we hear on the radio and at partys.

Image plan music magazine

Image plan

The image I am going to use is of a famous Dubstep/electronic music producer. He works alone and produces some of the world’s best dance music. His name is Jak kerr otherwise known as “WOMbajak” he started making Dubstep, electronic and dance music at a very young age of just 8, when he used to scratch all of his dads vinyl’s making out to be a DJ.  At the age of 12 he got his first set of decks and music software this is where he discovered the sound of Dubstep, electronic and dance. He performed his songs to his family and later on in school assembly’s and talent shows. It just so happened to be someone watching him in the school talent show was one of the world most famous producers Cameron Tubb. This kick started his career at the age of just 16 releasing his album 4 months after being signed to Cameron’s label OWSLA. “Feed me” WOMbajak’s new album included his most famous song “pile drive” which got to number 1 in 45 countries this brought Dubstep more into the lime light it is now the fastest growing music genre in the world, some say this is down to WOMbajak ,all we know is that he possibly the world’s most influential music producer the world has ever seen. This is why WOMbajak is going to be the person who models for my magazine.

The images I’m taking are going to be taken in a variety of different places from outside space to inside. My plan is to take pictures in  a variety of different places then pick the best picture for my front cover this will give me a better understanding of what I want and a bigger choice in case I change my mind. The image I want to portray in my picture’s is of aggression, seriousness and dedication this is because the music genre he producers is quite aggressive and energetic and require allot of skill and production.  They will be looking directly into the camera as if he is looking right at you. He will be wearing his normal Dj clothing on which is usually and white top maybe with a pattern or print on. He will also have either converse or vans on with brown chinos. This is normally the sort of clothing WOMbabjak wears.

WOMbajak will either have a DJ mixer or nothing at all as a prop if he has a DJ kit it will show that he is a DJ straight away and likes to make and play music. This will also link to the message I’m trying to portray as he will be playing the his music looking serious and dedicated. I’m going to take my pictures from many angles from high shots looking down on the artist to shots from underneath this will make him looking big and powerful. Using long shots will also be used as it gives a sense of the world around him depending where I take the pictures. Not all of the pictures will be used but taking a variety from different angles will help me get a better finished product. The text will not obscure the image in anyway and will be easy to see. I will do a couple of photo shoots prior to the making of my magazine so I have time to make any necessary changes to the pictures themselves or taking more pictures.

Music magazine name ideas

I have started a new produt of making a music magazine and im trying to think of a few names. Here are a few I thought of.

Tubbstep - I chose this beacsue it is related to my name and my favotuite music genre Dubstep

The Drop- I like this as it represents the drop in the a Dubstep song.

Bassline- The noise which is sometimes in dubstep

WUB-The noise which dubstep makes

6- A simple but remeberable name has nothing to do with dubstep

Ozone- Could represent that that dubstep is effecting the ozone or is the ozone which is protecting us.

Audience of my music magazine (Dubstep)

Music magazine genre conventions (Dubstep)

The genre conventions used in my Dubstep magazine are very much similar that to a normal magazine with the masthead either at the top of the page or down by the side. The masthead is usually bold as brass so out sticks out straight away. The front page is usually uncluttered and organised to make it as sharp as possible. The content which is written on the front is not that wordy but short and sweet so the front can be as minimal but effective. The font style used is bold and clear so it’s easy to read. The reason most of the front page is bold is because Dubstep is quite a bold music genre and something a bit different, quirky and modern with its sharpness and minimal like look. The content is both informal and formal as Dubstep is very much aimed at people who like dance or electronic music these can be people from all backgrounds. The content on the front is usually in listed in a bold font to make it simple. The house style for most Dubstep magazine is dark colours like dark black, blue and red as dub step is a usually seen as a dark music genre. On most Dubstep magazines one image is used and it fills up the whole page, it’s also mainly of the whole body whilst performing their music so you can see them in action. Many different types of photos can be used. Overall these are the main genre conventions which are used in Dubstep magazines and I am going to follow these so I can appeal to my target audience.

Image plan

The plan for my images is to take as many pictures as I can of the daily life in school and the sort of characters and feelings which the school gives. This is so I portray the school in the best light. The clothes they will be wearing are school clothes and the scenery will be around school.

Magazine Update 1

Today in my AS media lesson i have started to make my school magazinne using the techniques i have gained along the past few weeks. My magazine is called "learn like a boss". I have manged to choose a picture to use as my main image on the front cover and add my title to the magazine cover. I have also used some of the cut tools and the magic wand tool to make my front cover as effective as possibe. I still need to add my mast head a plug and many other things until my magazine cover is complete.

semiotics

Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols. A way of understanding the literal and the possible meanings of the images and words. The denotations mean the literal or obvious meanings. What you actually see for example the colour red is red. The connotations mean suggested meanings what we think it might infer. Again the colour red might infer danger blood, violence or heat it’s just a deeper meaning into the picture or object. The types of images I intend to use are pictures which are relevant to a school magazine. So they will be mainly pictures taken around the school and pictures of students in their uniform performing tasks. Aged 13 to 18 the shots will be taken from different angles for high shots to low shots and people looking straight into the camera to get a wide variety. The images should also appeal to their age range so they should be interesting. Semiotics in relation to and image are very import as they allow you to look in-depth into it to see if it has a purpose or meaning. For example some looking into the lens of the camera could represent dominance and they are taking it seriously.

Semiotics in relation of a magazine name is what the name means when it is broken up and how it is represented. As for my school magazine it should be school related or can be linked back to school. E.g. “Blade” would not be a suitable school magazine name. But “life in school” would be better.

making a proffesional magazine

Checking out this handy little slide show to get a grip on making a school magazine.

Interesting magazine

Just checking out one of my favourite magazines Empire http://www.empireonline.com/ and seeing if I can pick up any useful information for my school magazine. Such as layout, colours and content information.

Genre coventions

Genre

The term genre convention is an element that is repeated in a product over the same genre. These conventions are things such as master heads/images/name/date or issue number/colour themes and barcodes. These are the sort of things which people usually expect when looking at magazine cover.

Because my magazine fits into the same genre it will have similar conventions. Again like master heads/images and dates etc. These are all used to give the magazine a professional and uncluttered look to make it look professional and well made.

All of these factors will influence me and magazine as it will give me a basic understanding of how a magazine should look for the particular magazine I’m making. I will use it and interpret it in my own way giving it a unique sense of style.

Audience

Audience of my school magazine

The audience of my school magazine is a niche market as mainly teenagers aged 13 to 18 who will read the school magazine of Biddulph high. The primary viewers are pupils at the school although there are secondary viewers who are the parents and staff members. They are E.

The reader of my school magazine would expect to see a mixture of formal and informal language so it would appeal to everybody. Depending on what the article is about. For example if it was about keeping the school tidy it would be formal. From the magazine they would hope to see all different types of articles featuring upcoming events what happening around school. The images should be school related keeping to the theme. They should be engaged by the content making them read more and wanting more.
